UWM delivers Q3 results with a clear AI-first play for brokers

United Wholesale Mortgage (UWM) returned to profitability in the third quarter of 2026, posting net income of $212.6 million on total loan origination volume of $33.4 billion.

That's a sharp reversal from the $451.9 million net loss recorded in Q2 2026, driven by a hedge-related event tied to the company’s failed Two Harbors Investment Corp. bid.

Total revenue for the quarter ended September 30 reached $811.1 million, with adjusted EBITDA of $178.3 million and a gain-on-sale margin of 124 basis points, down from 133 bps in Q2 and 130 bps in Q3 2025.

Purchase originations totaled $22.8 billion, refinances $10.6 billion, and total equity expanded to $1.3 billion from $1.0 billion at June 30.

The debt-to-equity ratio fell from 6.13 to 4.21, tracking toward the company’s stated target range of 1.5 to 2.0, while expenses declined nearly 10% quarter-over-quarter.

Mat Ishbia, chairman, chief executive officer and president of UWM Holdings Corporation, in Pontiac, Michigan, framed the quarter as confirmation of platform durability across rate environments.

"Our third quarter results show the strength of UWM and our ability to perform in any market. Even with rates staying higher, our origination engine, operational execution and service levels continue to set us apart," he said.

"At the same time, the investments we’re making in artificial intelligence and technology are driving greater efficiencies across the business and helping lower expenses. The broker channel continues to show its strength and resiliency, and we’re going to keep investing in our business, helping mortgage brokers win and finding ways to make homeownership more affordable for consumers across the US."

MSR sales set to fund debt paydown

The company’s mortgage servicing rights (MSR) portfolio grew to $269.8 billion in unpaid principal balance at September 30, up from $247.6 billion in Q2 2026, with a weighted average coupon of 5.97%.

UWM plans to sell $70 to $80 billion of MSRs in Q4 2026, generating anticipated proceeds exceeding $1.8 billion.

Combined with $400 million from the rights offering, those funds are earmarked for non-funding debt reduction.

Available liquidity stood at approximately $1.35 billion at quarter’s end.

AI investment accelerates for broker partners

The quarter’s business highlights were tech-led. UWM upgraded ChatUWM, first launched in 2024, adding document analysis, pipeline summarization, and AI-generated marketing content.

A ChatUWM mobile app with an AI Voice Assistant followed, alongside a Mortgage Matchup plugin for ChatGPT connecting consumers with broker partners.

As MPA has covered in its analysis of AI-driven consolidation in the mortgage broker channel, VantageScore 4.0 now shows approximately 25% of UWM borrowers receiving a more advantageous credit outcome.

MPA’s tracking of AI adoption among American mortgage brokers shows 55% now use AI daily or regularly, per AD Mortgage’s 2026 survey of more than 250 professionals.

Kim Nichols, chief TPO production officer at PennyMac TPO, in Pontiac, Michigan, told a National Association of Mortgage Brokers (NAMB) audience in Las Vegas that the technology demands a wider lens than product-cycle thinking.

“I think you should think of AI as the most significant development in our lifetime,” Nichols said.

“That’s going to change not only how we work, how we do our loans, it’s going to change our lives.”
