Tax cuts won't affect purchase decision say future homebuyers

More than half of future homebuyers will not change their decision based on recent changes to the US tax code.

Just 26% of potential buyers said they will now delay their purchase while 57% said the tax changes won’t impact their decision at all. The is new poll from Apartment List finds that 13% expect to achieve homeownership faster thanks to tax cuts.

Because the effects of the tax changes are not the same for everyone or every housing market, so clearly those markets that will be more adversely affected also report a generally more negative sentiment.

For those that say they will be negatively impacted by the changes, delaying their home purchase is the number one reaction (29%) followed by planning to purchase in another state (18%).

However, even in counties where they will not see negative impact, 26% of respondents said they will delay buying a home. Just 9% said they would look at moving to another state.

The survey also found that negative sentiment was generally greater among Democrats (38% of party voters said the tax changes have negatively affected their plans); while Republicans were less negative (10%).
