AIME's Katie Sweeney on why leadership has no gender

Katie Sweeney’s leadership style is a combination of grit and grace. Harnessing both her feminine and masculine qualities has not only expanded her ability to lead but also enabled her to inspire others to do the same.

In the Elite Women 2022 special report, Sweeney (pictured) explained why balancing these traits is essential in thriving in a male-dominated industry.

“Grit is all about digging deep, working hard, and showing what’s possible. Grit motivates others, but grace teaches,” the head of the Association of Independent Mortgage Experts (AIME) said. “Grace allows you to understand all angles and to speak in a way that will resonate with your audience. Grit is something that burns in your core, and grace is the polish that grows through experiences over time. Showing the importance of both through action is the first step in being a strong leader – male or female.

“I will never shrink myself or water down my personality to make others more comfortable, but I am very self-aware and make an effort to understand the best ways to engage with others based on their needs. Being competitive or communicating directly doesn’t mean I can’t lead with empathy and kindness; it simply takes a little effort.”

Many women, Sweeney added, know what it feels like to be marginalized. “So, it’s critical to be mindful of other marginalized groups, especially in the housing industry. You were given a seat at the table for a reason. Own it.”
