Housing coalition backs Turner for HUD secretary

A coalition of housing and real estate organizations has formally endorsed Scott Turner as the next secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

The Mortgage Bankers Association, leading the coalition, outlined its support in a letter addressed to Senate Banking Committee chair Tim Scott and Ranking member Elizabeth Warren.

In November 2024, President-elect Donald Trump announced Turner as his choice to lead HUD. Turner acknowledged the nomination on his LinkedIn profile, stating, "Thank you, Mr. President. I am thrilled to continue the outstanding work we began in your last administration at HUD with an incredible team. I am deeply humbled by your confidence in my nomination."

The coalition’s letter emphasized Turner’s experience in both public and private sectors as a key qualification for the role.

During the Trump administration, Turner served as the executive director of the White House Opportunity and Revitalization Council.

"In that role, he was charged with coordinating federal resources in Opportunity Zones and other distressed communities. In the private sector, Mr. Turner has been a senior executive at a national multifamily housing developer," the coalition states in the letter.

The coalition’s letter highlights Turner’s potential to address the nation’s ongoing housing affordability crisis.

According to the coalition, HUD’s leadership will be instrumental in resolving housing shortages and ensuring broader access to affordable housing.

"Mr. Turner understands the value of strengthening public-private partnerships and collaborating with stakeholders to expand the supply of housing. Equally important, he is passionate about the need to target investment to traditionally underserved communities," the letter states.

The coalition includes 23 organizations, such as the American Land Title Association, the Manufactured Housing Institute, the National Association of Home Builders, and the Real Estate Roundtable. These groups represent diverse segments of the housing industry, from multifamily housing developers to real estate professionals and housing cooperatives.
