Homebuilder hires Stearns Lending ex-CEO for financial services efforts

Regional homebuilder William Lyon Homes has named Brian Hale to the newly created position of president for financial services.

Hale brings to the role more than 35 years of experience in the mortgage banking industry. He most recently served as CEO of direct mortgage lender Stearns Lending. Stearns Lending announced Hale’s departure in May.

In January 2015, William Lyon Homes announced that it entered into an agreement with Stearns Lending to form William Lyon Mortgage, a limited liability company that will offer mortgage banking services.

William Lyon Homes President and CEO Matthew Zaist said Hale will focus on the homebuilder’s financial services initiatives, which includes interests in two separates mortgage joint ventures. Additionally, Hale will explore additional ancillary business opportunities, including title and insurance.

“We have made significant progress on our growth plans for our core homebuilding business, and as we continue to build on our size and scale in our attractive Western US markets, we believe there is a tremendous opportunity to further serve our homebuyers and complement our homebuilding operations, while providing additional sources of earnings for the company, through further offerings in financial services and other ancillary businesses,” Zaist said.

Zaist also said that Hale is ideal for the role given his experience in full financial and operational responsibility, channel development, originations, credit, and servicing as well as his reputation and track record in the industry.
