Fairway branch manager on building a successful mortgage team

Beyond branding, Brian McCauley’s focus has been on nurturing talent and building relationships. When it comes to hiring, the Fairway Independent Mortgage branch manager emphasized the importance of teamwork and the role that attitude and commitment play in building a successful team.

In a recent Q&A interview, McCauley outlined that anyone can learn the skills necessary for success in the industry as long as they have the right attitude and willingness to learn.

“When it comes to teammates, the number one thing I look at is attitude,” he said. “Attitude is a big component of being a great teammate. People with the right attitude normally also have the right commitment. I think everything in every industry is a learned skill. It doesn’t matter if you’re in the mortgage business. It doesn’t matter if you’re learning how to play golf, whatever it is. Over time, these people have learned the skills - and so, that’s why I start people with the right attitude. They have the right commitment, they’re ready to learn, and I can teach them every skill they need to be an expert [who is] successful in this industry.”

McCauley’s approach to building a strong team and fostering a positive culture within the company has been crucial to the success of the business and its ability to scale and grow in the future.

“The mortgage industry is a very regulated industry with a lot of paperwork and a lot of moving pieces,” McCauley said in the latest episode of MPA Talk. “Buying a house is probably the biggest investment purchase that anyone will ever make. And so, it takes a lot of hands and a lot of folks that do things the right way to give people a great experience to make sure they close on time and are able to facilitate that transaction from start to finish. It’s kind of like a doctor’s office.

“They have to have a lot of teammates and a lot of help to make sure that things go smooth from start to finish.”
