Realtors want lawmakers to prioritize measures that will increase the housing supply

California realtors call for "bold new solutions" to solve affordability crisis

The California Association of Realtors (CAR) has called on state lawmakers to prioritize increasing the housing supply in the upcoming 2020 legislative session.

Jared Martin, president of CAR, said that “bold new solutions” like Senate Bill 50 are needed to address the state’s affordability crisis.

“While some meaningful progress was made this year with the enactment of Senator Nancy Skinner's SB 330 to streamline the development permitting process, this crisis demands even more robust and meaningful policy changes,” he said. “The legislature must advance bold new solutions, like CAR co-sponsored SB 50 by Senator Scott Wiener, if we are to have any hope of closing the state's widening supply gap."

If passed, SB 50 would re-zone residential property around transit lines and job centers, allowing developers to turn low-density single-family homes into high-density residential buildings, such as duplexes, triplexes, apartments, and condominiums.

“California's leaders must respond with real solutions before it's too late and our children are left without the housing options they deserve,” said Martin. “CAR stands ready to work with lawmakers and Governor Gavin Newsom to advance policies that deliver a brighter housing future for all Californians.”
