How I became a broker – Hannah Bashford’s story

Hannah Bashford (pictured), a seasoned mortgage and protection adviser and the proud owner of Model Financial Solutions, shares the story of her journey into the mortgage industry.

Getting into the industry

Bashford’s foray into financial services began as an administrator in 2004. Her initial exposure to the intricacies of the industry involved several years dedicated to pension-related work.

However, it was her transfer to a London-based estate agency’s mortgage and protection office that laid the foundation for her expertise. In this role, she provided crucial support to mortgage advisers stationed in various branches.

“The role of administrator gave me a fantastic start in what is expected of mortgage advisers and the processes of lenders,” Bashford said. “So, when I trained to be a mortgage adviser, I was already prepared for the lenders’ processes and had learned much of their criteria as I had been dealing with the day-to-day admin for several years.”

Motivations to continue as a broker

When asked about her motivations, Bashford’s response is rooted in a genuine desire to make a positive impact on people’s lives.

“I love to help people, and I believe by helping people achieve their property goals, get the best rate, or by making sure they are protected should anything awful happen, I am helping them in a positive and constructive way,” she said.

For her, the role of a broker goes beyond mere financial transactions. It is also about contributing to the well-being and prosperity of her clients.

Looking to the future

Looking ahead, Bashford unveils a forward-focused mindset with a penchant for new challenges. Always contemplating the next project, she hints at having a couple of initiatives in the pipeline.

In a previous interview, Bashford said that when she started Model Financial Solutions in 2012, her mission at first was more about helping her clients and staying afloat than changing the world. But as time has gone on, she said social purpose has become increasingly integral to everything she does.

“For my business, I would like to help more women get into financial services, and train the next generation so I will continue to have a training focus and nurture those new advisers,” she revealed.
