Sunshine, lifestyle and cost of living continue to drive overseas property searches among potential UK buyers
The Algarve in Portugal has retained its position as the most popular overseas destination among British property seekers, according to new analysis from property listing platform Rightmove.
Paphos in Cyprus ranked second, followed by Mallorca in Spain. Rounding out the top ten were the Dordogne and Normandy in France, Alicante, the Costa del Sol and Murcia in Spain, and Crete and Corfu in Greece.
At country level, Spain was the most searched overall, followed by France, Italy, Cyprus, Portugal, Greece, Malta, Ireland, Bulgaria and Gibraltar.
"Whether it's a permanent move, a second home abroad or more casual summer browsing during the holidays, we're seeing that many British home-hunters are still drawn to familiar favourite destinations," said Nick Robertson (pictured right), director of overseas at Rightmove.
"Sunshine, lifestyle, and the cost of living continue to attract many to consider an overseas move. For those thinking seriously about buying abroad, summer can be a really key time to explore what different locations have to offer, from the type of homes available to practical considerations of moving overseas or buying a holiday home.
"We often hear from people that they head to Rightmove during their summer break away to see what a permanent move or more regular visit could look like."
Ian Harris, president of industry body NAEA Propertymark, urged prospective buyers to approach overseas purchases with caution.
"Demand for overseas property continues to reflect the appeal of warmer climates, lifestyle opportunities and, for some buyers, the prospect of a different pace of life," Harris said.
"While destinations such as the Algarve, Mallorca and Paphos remain enduring favourites, prospective buyers should ensure their decision is based on careful planning rather than the attraction of a holiday setting alone.
"Understanding local property laws, taxation, residency requirements and ongoing ownership costs is vital before making any commitment. Working with knowledgeable, regulated property professionals can help consumers make informed decisions and avoid costly mistakes when purchasing overseas."
