Technology is the way forward for estate agents

He said: "So bricks and clicks, can they work together; can they be a success? The answer has to be a resounding yes.

"Last year we saw shops increase by 3.5% and we also saw online grow by nearly 20%. And we continue to invest in both.

"We've got 60% more shops than in 2001 when we bought buy.com. So our portfolio of shops has grown and our business has grown and it will continue to be that way.

"Both channels are growing right now for the year to date."

He stated that seamlessly linking the online and instore parts of the business has been integral, as wifi is now being supplied in John Lewis shops for example.

He said: "A customer who will shop with us online and in store will spend.

"So we want them to shop across - we want them and they want to."

With John Lewis announcing new retail stores, including the Grand Central store in Birmingham which opens in 2015, Barryman said the business will not stand still.

"For us retail has come a long way. We are 150 years old. It is going to continue to change.

"We have seen phenomenal growth online which has been very successful and it's continuing to embrace that technology; it's continuing to meet customer demands and respond to the changes.

"Most importantly it's partners that drive the success of the John Lewis partnership. And it's having the partners selling both channels for us and integrating both channels which will drive future success."
