Scotland scraps Right to Buy

The Scottish government had already placed limitations on the scheme, including excluding new tenants, but has now moved to abolish the scheme all together.

Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon is expected to confirm that the policy will be abolished when she visits a housing association in Glasgow today.

Since it was introduced by Margaret Thatcher's government in 1980, around 455,000 properties have been bought in Scotland using the scheme.

The move follows a Scottish government consultation last year which revealed that a majority of Scottish councils wanted the right to buy policy scrapped.

The report also showed that many tenants and social landlords wanted it to end.
