Scarborough remains defiant over mortgage incentives

From 28 September until 29 October 2005 anyone taking out a MortgagePlus five-year flexible Base Rate tracker or five-year flexible fixed rate loan worth £50,000 or more will receive an Apple iMac G5 package worth up to £2,600 on completion. This deal is available through intermediaries.

Scarborough received criticism over the launch of a plasma television incentive earlier in the year but Tony Burdin, head of retail strategy at the Scarborough, hit back.

He said: “The plasma did really well, in line with its purpose. It was a limited edition product with a tranche of just £5 million but demand was overwhelming. While we success- fully tested the water with the plasma, we believe MortgagePlus is even better as it offers a truly unique, bespoke package – including a selection of the very latest equipment from the world’s most cutting-edge suppliers. We expect this run to be even more attractive.”

The two MortgagePlus products offer flexible features, a refunded valuation fee and £300 cashback. After the five-year period, the product reverts to the Scarborough’s lifetime interest rate deal of Base Rate plus 0.99 per cent – currently 5.49 per cent.

Ray Boulger, senior technical manager at John Charcol, said: “I have priced the cost of the goods in question and they aren’t too far off the mark and have been cleverly designed for younger age groups and for all the family. The important thing to remember is, do I need or really want the goods in question? If not, forget it.”
