RICS launches estate agency guide

The book will raise agency standards but will also improve the consumers' experience of the home buying and selling process, according to RICS.

Buying a home is the biggest financial transaction that many people make and with this in mind, the RICS has decided to reinforce the standards of its members by updating formal guidance and advice on ethics.

The Blue Book will inform the technical excellence of RICS Members, but is also a valuable resource for all those involved in residential property and who strive to achieve the highest level of professionalism and consumer service, says RICS. The book has been built around principles developed by key industry stakeholders including practitioners and consumer groups.

The Blue Book will include:

  • Best practice standards, helping surveyors provide the best service.
  • An agreed set of principles to help reach the highest levels of professionalism.
  • Advice for every stage of the buying and selling process, from marketing and sourcing clients through to completing the sale and beyond.
  • Quick-reference sections for all relevant legislative and regulatory documents.
  • Detailed advice on ethics and best practice, including how to avoid conflicts of interest.
  • Help to build better relationships with buyers and sellers by clarifying priorities, and managing expectations of the agents' role.
  • The book can be shown to buyers and sellers to demonstrate adherence to industry guidelines
  • Key cases and real-life examples which bring the advice to life.
