North-South divide in use of brokers

The survey, taken from CACI’s mortgage market database during the third quater of 2003 to the second quarter of 2004, revealed that 58 per cent of all mortgages originated in Greater London were introduced compared with only 49 per cent in the North West and Yorkshire and Humberside.

Exactly half of Welsh mortgages come via brokers with 52 and 51 per cent for Scotland and Northern Ireland respectively. The South East and West both came in at 56 per cent.

Over the whole country 53 per cent of mortgages came via intermediaries.

Commenting on the results Gordon Blunt, market analysis manager for CACI, said: “These results serve to confirm the importance of brokers as a means of distribution for lenders and the importance clients put on their advice.”

Thomas Reeh, chief executive officer at national brokerage the Black & White Group, said he was surprised by the overall figures for introduced lending. “Some people in the industry believe the actual figure is as high as 70 per cent but lenders massage the figures to make themselves look better.”
