Nationwide Foundation announces new CEO

Charity funder Nationwide Foundation has announced the appointment of Kate Markey (pictured), who will join the organisation as its new chief executive early next year.

Markey comes from a background in journalism, having been editor of The Big Issue North for a number of years. She also has experience in social enterprise, social investment, and impact consulting, having been CEO of the London Community Foundation for more than five years. In 2019, she was named in the Evening Standard Progress 1000: London’s most influential philanthropic leaders.

The Nationwide Foundation is an independent charity funded by Nationwide Building Society. It aims to improve the lives of those most in need through its grant making, convening, and influencing work, with an ambition to make the housing system work for all.

“The UK’s housing crisis is having a devastating impact on families and communities,” Markey commented. “I feel privileged to be joining a team and board of trustees so committed to tackling the crisis now and for the long-term, working strategically and collaboratively across the housing sector.”

Saphié Ashtiany, chair of the Nationwide Foundation, said of Markey’s appointment:

“Kate will be able to lead the development of our strategy, taking a long-term approach to influencing the conditions for systemic change in the housing sector, both directly and with our partners including, in particular, the mutually important and valued relationship with Nationwide Building Society.”
