Mortgage leaders gather for summit

Europe's top mortgage leaders and mortgage bond issuers will gather in Madrid from Sept. 22-24 for EuroCatalyst 2002, an industry-wide event focused on the future of mortgage lending and housing finance in Europe in the context of globalisation and the challenges of Basle II.

The conference theme addresses the gap between local aspects of mortgage lending and national market structures vs. global funding activities, placing the entire event in the context of the question, ‘European mortgage markets - will national markets survive globalisation?’

An elite lineup of speakers and panelists have been brought in to address the most critical issues facing the lending industry, including the impact of globalisation on cross-border European mortgage lending, whether a single European mortgage market is possible, factors driving secondary capital market development in Europe, strategies for increased risk management, outsourcing and back-office efficiency, and the strengths and weaknesses of European lending markets.

This definitive event is the first-ever industry gathering to be supported and endorsed by the major mortgage trade associations in Europe, including the European Mortgage Federation, the Council of Mortgage Lenders, Verband deutscher Hypothekenbanken (Association of German Mortgage Banks), the International Union for Housing Finance, Realkreditrådet (Association of Danish Mortgage Banks), Confederación Española de Cajas de Ahorros (Spanish Confederation of Savings Banks or CECA) and The European Group of Valuers' Associations (TEGoVA), with additional assistance from Asociación Hipotecaria Española (Spanish Mortgage Association).

Top industry figures leading sessions include Judith Hardt, secretary general of the European Mortgage Federation; Michael Coogan, director general of the Council of Mortgage Lenders; Dr. Louis Hagen, general manager of the Association of German Mortgage Banks; Jean-Luc Spetz, managing director of Eurohypo Luxembourg; Eric Klopfer, vice president of global regulatory affairs for GE Mortgage Insurance; Torben Gjede, director general of the Association of Danish Mortgage Banks; Christopher Rodrigues, group chief executive at Bradford & Bingley; Andrew Pople, head of retail banking at Abbey National; Clive Wood, head of banking and mortgages at HSBC; and Will Ross, head of ABS Research at ABN Amro, among others.
