Local authorities can help the housing market

Glyn Taylor, chairman of CML Cymru, said that 8.5 per cent of homes in Wales are classed as ‘unfit’, and lenders could contribute to improving this through closer links with local authorities.

"Lenders are willing to be involved but we would ask that local authorities work together to develop solutions. It would be very difficult for lenders to be involved with 22 local authorities and 22 different solutions," said Taylor.

The financial services industry is very important to the UK as a whole and housing alone contributes 13.6 per cent to the gross domestic product.

CML members have a keen interest in the Welsh market, and currently have around £23.3 billion of mortgage loans outstanding in Wales.
