L&G appoints Thompson

Thompson will take up responsibility for managing Legal & General’s Mortgage Club. As well as being the key contact for lenders in the club, Thompson will be responsible for managing the exclusive products programme and ensuring that advisers have access to compelling mortgage products.

Thompson has recently joined Legal & General from Paymentshield, where he ran its mortgage club. Thompson has been in financial services for over 20 years, focussing primarily on sales and marketing roles in the mortgage sector. In addition to running Paymentshield’s mortgage club, he has previously held similar positions at Winterthur Life and St. James’s Place, where he launched St. James’s Place Bank. Whilst at Paymentshield he also ran a multi-tied life service to directly authorised intermediaries.

Thompson replaces John Cupis and will report to Stephen Smith, director of housing.

Commenting on the appointment, Smith said: “We look forward to having Ben on board and we’re sure his experience and enthusiasm will help us drive our plans forward. Ben takes over one of the strongest teams in the industry, with Martyn Smith heading up mortgage products, Danny Belton (operations), Anita Howe (marketing), and sales handled by a national team of sales development managers. This team has helped the Legal & General Mortgage Club to become one of the largest mortgage distributors in the country with over a billion pounds worth of applications every fortnight. Ben joins us at an exciting time as we push for over £30 billion of applications this year.”
