ifs develops supervisory qualification

The Certificate in Supervising in a Regulated Environment (CeSRE) is largely modelled on parts of the Advanced Certificate in Mortgage Advice and Practice (Adv CeMAP). The qualification will have a strong focus on the regulatory aspects of supervision, in particular the Financial Services Authority (FSA) requirements on Training and Competence (T&C).

Supervisors who undertake the CeSRE will also receive training in record-keeping, competency based interviewing, leadership models and motivational theory.

Registrations for the qualification will open on 1 August 2006.

Mark Roberts, head of faculty financial regulation at the ifs, said: “There are a number of supervisors who carry responsibility for the advice that their staff give. This qualification seeks to recognise and develop the essential competencies needed for this role. It is also an excellent first step to management for those who wish to accelerate their career.”

Melanie Bien, associate director of Savills, agreed that the qualification would be advantageous for developing skills. She said: “We go to great lengths to encourage our intermediaries and those with the talent to undertake these types of qualifications. It’s good it will focus on regulation, as it’s the regulatory side of things where confusion can arise. Intermediaries new to the business do look to their supervisors for guidance on regulation, as it’s such a different environment for them. If the regulatory role is understood, it can only be of benefit. Also, if a supervisor knows exactly what their staff are doing, it gives them confidence. It’s all about knowing what’s going on.”
