Government target ‘set to fail’

According to research by UCB Home Loans, brokers were sceptical as to whether the nation’s home can go green. Only 44 per cent believed the UK could reduce its carbon emissions by half by 2050 – even though the target is a 60 per cent reduction.

With government figures showing homes are responsible for 27 per cent of carbon emissions, UCB said brokers were in a unique position to help tackle climate change.

Keith Astill, managing director at UCB, said: “The views of brokers are important, because they are responsible for arranging a large proportion of all home loans – including new builds. They deal directly with buyers and are ideally placed to make a judgement.”

88 per cent of the 1,075 brokers questioned believed the UK should do more to tackle global warming, with 52 per cent admitting they had taken steps to improve the environmental impact of their businesses.

65 per cent believed lenders should focus more on green issues, while 58 per cent insisted brokerages should do more to reduce emissions.

Arron Bardoe, sales director at Flexible-mortgage.net, said: “There’s already so much to cover in the time you spend with the client, so it’s hard to tell them how to be ‘greener’. This will probably change with Home Information Packs though.
