Financial fraud on the increase

The combined total number of false identity/impersonation cases now stands at 54,000 in 9 months, compared to 53,000 in the whole of 2001. This remains the most rapidly growing type of fraud in the United Kingdom.

The financial benefits or fraud savings of £263 million reported by CIFAS Members have already exceeded 2001’s full year total of £255 million. The final figure for the 2002 calendar year is expected to be £360 million, up 40% on 2001. This is a major achievement that demonstrates the commitment and success of CIFAS members, and particularly the financial services industry in identifying and preventing fraud.

Insurance claims fraud shows the largest growth as insurance companies start to identify frauds and provide details to CIFAS. This is likely to be a growth area for CIFAS as more insurers are becoming Members.
