Estate agent treks across Sahara

The adventure was part of his on-going money raising program in support of cancer relief.

Speaking of his experiences, Gordon, a director of local estate agency Freckleton Brown, and a franchisee of Mortgage Talk, commented: "Walking over just a small section of the Sahara was very different from my regular duties involving property issues in and around the north Nott's area. The desert occupies an area of around 3.5 million sq. miles and crossing at one of the widest points is something that only the locals can sensibly attempt. Even today with all the marvels of modern technology, people can and do just vanish and are never found.

"Our challenge took place over 40 hours within a six day period with day time temperatures above 30 degrees that plummeted to below zero at night. Simply walking was occasionally very difficult and camping out in the cold was not a pleasant experience. Until you've experienced it, it's hard to imagine how low the temperature can drop in the desert once the sun sets."

Gordon's original target was sponsorship of £2,000 but in the event he raised over £3,000 thanks to many generous donations from family, friends and colleagues.

Thanking all those who contributed, Gordon added: "I'm very grateful to everyone who put their hands into their pockets to support this venture and hope that they won't mind me contacting them again later in the year. Around October I'm going to be walking along part of the Great Wall of China to raise more money for Macmillan Cancer Relief."

As part of the plans for the Chinese venture Gordon plans to acquire some new boots because those he wore in the Sahara literally fell to pieces.

Joking about this, Gordon said: "The terrain in the desert is very abrasive and aggressive. The front sections of my boots just wore away and I finished the walk with them wrapped and patched with lengths of adhesive tape. I guess I wouldn't have won any prizes for stylish dressing when crossing the finishing line, but at least I completed the trek. Perhaps I should be looking out for a sponsor who makes really robust boots before the next walk."
