Energy grants offered to FTBs

Housing Minister, Yvette Cooper, proposed that homes purchased with an E, F or G energy rating could benefit from the grant system. After hosting a meeting with energy suppliers, local authorities, and the Energy Savings Trust, Cooper revealed that she would be seeking to develop new measures to help home owners implement the recommendations.

The proposal is for grants of £100-£300 from energy suppliers for the lower graded homes to better insulate their homes.

Cooper said: “It is important that vested interests are not put ahead of the needs of the consumer and the wider environment. The challenge instead to all in the home buying and selling process should be to seize on the opportunity from Home Information Packs and Energy Performance Certificates to help home buyers get their bills and carbon emissions down.”

Eddie Goldsmith, senior partner at Goldsmith Williams, said: “This is definitely a sweetener by the government as it is aware of the disenchantment about HIPs but the question is whether it will make any difference.”
