Bank of England director to chair ifs School of Finance

Dr Fisher has been the Bank of England's executive director for markets since March 2009 and is a member of the Monetary Policy Committee. He and his directorate are responsible for all Bank operations in financial markets and their balance sheet consequences. Dr Fisher joined the Bank in 1990, having previously worked at the University of Warwick where he taught and conducted specialised research on macroeconomic models.

Dr Fisher replaces Bruce Carnegie-Brown. As a former chairman, Carnegie-Brown had been undertaking the role on a temporary basis following the premature departure of previous Chairman, Lord James Sassoon, who had to give up the role to take up his position as commercial secretary to the Treasury.

The ifs is an educational charity, incorporated by Royal Charter, and has a remit to provide the financial services industry with a skilled and competent workforce whilst also promoting a better understanding of finance amongst consumers. It has approximately 50,000 students in over 100 countries and is the only specialist provider of financial education with the power to award its own taught degrees.

Commenting, Gavin Shreeve, principal of the ifs School of Finance, said, “We are delighted that Dr Fisher will be our new chairman. His insight, stature and expertise will doubtless prove invaluable in helping to ensure we continue to meet the financial educational requirements of both the financial services industry and society at large.”
