An Englishman’s home is still his castle

Homebuyers rate peace and quiet way ahead of any other consideration when choosing a new home, according to Alliance & Leicester’s quarterly moving improving index.

Twenty per cent said peacefulness was the most attractive factor when looking around for an area, but surprisingly, only 3 per cent of people rated house price movement as their first priority.

Lifestyle considerations outweighed financial in many cases with 16 and 17 per cent stating that proximity to family and friends and the quality of local schools and universities were more likely to draw them to a certain area.

Good bars and restaurants, nice neighbours and good local shops were only the most decisive factor in a move for 5 per cent of the 4000 people surveyed.
