Paul Broadhead, head of mortgage policy at the Building Societies Association, will be running the Virgin Money London Marathon on Sunday 28 April to raise money for homelessness charity Shelter.

He said that two years ago, in a moment of madness,he decided to run five races to raise money for Shelter, including the London Marathon and Great North Run–and this yearheisdoing both of these events again.

Broadhead (pictured) said: “For a number of years now I have been a big supporter of Shelter, as we know homelessness and inadequate housing has reached, or actually gone beyond,a critical point. We are in the midst of a fully blown crisis.

“You only need to walk the streets of a major city to see the huge increase in rough sleeping. Many people who are there as a result of an unexpected life event and a lack of support to help them. It could happen to any one of us.

“Working in the job that I do, housing is a passion of mine. I firmly believe that everyone deserves to have a roof over their head whatever their personal circumstances.

“It is as important to the nation’s wellbeing as healthcare, education and defence. It should be a government priority, and something needs to be done.”

But training this year hasn’t got to a great start due to having the flu,and six weeks on Broadhead is struggling to run because of a cough.

However, hevowed to carry on with the marathon.

He added: “Nonetheless, I’m determine to make it to both the start and finish line in London in a few short weeks.

“If an overweight middle-aged bloke like me can get myself out at 5am before work to run then I hope I can count on the support of my many industry friends and colleagues to support me along the way.”
