18-35s: Our parents had it better

People of all ages expected things to get worse for the next generation.

The 18-35 year old generation thinks their parents had it better regarding housing, research from Shelter/IpsosMORI has found.

Three quarters (74%) of Generation Y reckoned it’s harder to find a home to settle down in than for the generation before, whether renting or buying.

Two in five (40%) worried they will never secure a suitable home, while people of all ages expected things to get worse for the next generation.

Stephen Smith, director, housing partnerships at Legal & General, said: “These findings from Shelter highlight the sad reality that many young people in our country are facing.

“The housing shortage and rise in house prices over the last 15 years have left the younger generation cut adrift from the housing market.

“The housing shortage is likely to have a long-term effect on potential first time buyers unless we can dramatically increase the supply side.

“The government has slowly begun to build the houses that we need, but it is still a far cry from what the UK needs to reverse the damage that has been done.

“Solving the housing dilemma for future generations is a complex challenge and one that requires innovative thinking and approaches – ‘more of the same’ is not going to work.”
