London lagging behind UK in rent rises

Across the whole of the UK annual rent growth has slowed for five consecutive months to stand at 3%.

London rents saw an annual increase of 1.6% in November compared to 3.1% across the rest of the UK, HomeLet’s Rental Index has found.

Martin Totty, chief executive at HomeLet, said: “It is difficult to think of a period when there have been so many external interventions in the private rental sector as yet seen during 2016.

“It’s unclear yet who will emerge as the ‘winners’ and the ‘losers.’”

The market was hit by the 3% stamp duty surcharge in April and the government banned letting agents from charging tenants fees in the Autumn Statement.
