Government seeks feedback on letting agent fee ban

The government is seeking views on its planned letting agent fee ban with the launch of a consultation paper today.

As detailed in the paper the government plans to ban letting agents from charging fees as well as landlords and other third parties from doing the same.

The ban is designed to stop letting agents from charging both tenants and landlords fees.

The government is hoping it will improve transparency, affordability for tenants and incentivise longer-term tenancies.

Feedback will be accepted until 7 June, a two month window.

Gavin Barwell, Housing Minister, said: “We’re determined to make all types of housing more affordable and secure for ordinary working people.

“Tenants should only be required to pay their rent alongside a refundable deposit and not face hidden fees.

“Our housing white paper sets out other ways we will help those renting, including building more homes for rent and providing longer, family friendly tenancies.”

To respond to the paper the details are here.
