Secrets to success: how to be a successful broker

Mortgage Introducer has been running a series of articles with top mortgage brokers and professionals across the UK sector, quizzing them on the attributes and skills needed to be a top broker.

In this edition, MI catches up with Our Mortgage Broker director Akhil Mair (pictured left) and Lawson Financial’s Michelle Lawson (pictured right).

How do you become a successful broker?

Mair said becoming a successful broker is a journey marked by dedication, perseverance, and an unyielding pursuit of excellence.

There needs to be a commitment to continuous learning, coupled with a keen awareness of market trends and a dedication to refining one’s approach to client service.

“Throughout my own journey, I have found that overcoming challenges has been instrumental in shaping my growth and success,” he said.

From navigating market fluctuations and fierce competition to adapting to regulatory changes, Mair said, each obstacle presented an opportunity to demonstrate adaptability and resilience.

“Embracing these challenges with a proactive mindset allowed me to not only survive, but thrive in an ever-changing landscape,” he said.

Central to his journey, Mair said, has been the cultivation of a robust network of clients and industry connections. Fostering trust through transparent communication and delivering personalised solutions tailored to each client’s unique needs, he added, had been paramount.

By prioritising integrity and building genuine relationships, Mair has been able to establish a solid foundation for broker success.

“For brokers embarking on their own entrepreneurial journey, I offer the following advice gleaned from my own experiences; prioritise integrity in all your dealings, nurture authentic relationships built on trust and mutual respect, and remain vigilant in staying abreast of industry developments,” he said. Never underestimate the power of continuous learning, he added - it is the key to staying ahead of the curve in a rapidly evolving landscape.

Clients come first

Lawson (pictured right), said a truly successful broker has a commitment to prioritising the needs of their clients above all else.

In addition to their professional prowess, Lawson said a successful broker exudes warmth, approachability, and a sense of accountability.

“Over the years, they cultivate a loyal base of clients, some of whom evolve into cherished friendships, a testament to the profound impact of their personalised approach,” she said.

Lawson said seasoned brokers possess an intimate understanding of their clients’ unique financial profiles, often surpassing their clients’ own awareness.

This deep-seated familiarity, she believes, not only engenders consumer confidence, but also enables brokers to tailor bespoke solutions that resonate with their clients’ aspirations and circumstances.

For those embarking on their journey in the field, Lawson said the path to success begins with a willingness to immerse oneself fully in the learning process, akin to being a sponge absorbing insights and wisdom from seasoned mentors and peers alike.

“Embracing a mindset of continuous growth and evolution, they glean invaluable lessons from each encounter, integrating the most effective strategies into their own repertoire,” she said.

“With a meticulous approach characterised by organisation, precision, and methodical execution, aspiring brokers lay the groundwork for sustainable success.”
