How I became a broker – Jamie Alexander's story

Despite all the market challenges, Jamie Alexander (pictured), has managed to keep his brokerage running for more than four years now, and it is still growing and thriving. Like others in the industry, he has his own unique story to share about his experiences on his way to becoming a mortgage broker.

Getting into the industry

Alexander was an insurance broker prior to entering the mortgage industry 11 years ago. He was then hired by national estate agency group Connells as a mortgage broker.

“I took their training, passed my qualifications, and gained invaluable experience and insights into the world of property transactions,” he recounted. “During this time, I also invested in my first few properties of my own.”

He moved on and worked in a niche area of mortgage broking which specialised in new build properties and government schemes.

“After working for this brokerage for four years, it felt right to then set up my own,” said Alexander, who founded Alexander Southwell Mortgages in 2019. He is now the mortgage director of the Southampton-based brokerage.

Motivation to continue as a broker

Alexander said the business takes pride in delivering top-notch mortgage brokerage services to both residential and business customers.

“Our primary goal is to ensure our clients receive fair mortgage rates that align with their financial needs, all at reasonable prices,” he added. “With a strong dedication to providing fee-free or low-cost brokerage services, we prioritise transparency and strive to keep our clients well-informed and educated throughout the entire process.

Beyond its role as a service provider, Alexander said the brokerage also aimed to foster genuine relationships, by becoming trusted friends and mentors to their customers.

Looking to the future

As it looks to the future, Alexander said the business was driven by a vision of holistic growth, both personally and professionally, while making a positive difference in the lives of many.

“A key aspiration is to expand our expertise into the specialised realm of equity release, recognising the importance of catering to diverse financial needs and empowering homeowners in new ways,” he stated.

“Furthermore, we have ambitious plans by assembling a larger dedicated team of mortgage professionals who are client-centric, so we can expand and grow our business.”
