How I became a broker – James Miles’ story

Upon graduating from college, James Miles (pictured) wrote to over 30 different banks with a deep desire to work in the financial sector, seeking both financial stability and a lifelong career.

He was accepted into Halifax after a successful interview, marking the beginning of his journey.

Getting into the industry

The year was 2008, and facing the challenges of the financial crash, Miles knew he had to rapidly acquire knowledge.

“Within three years, I obtained my CeMap qualification and delved into mortgage advising at the age of 21,” he related. “Admittedly, it was a challenging start, especially since I had never owned a home before and learned the ins and outs of the job on the fly.

“Fast forward a decade, I was offered redundancy which gave me a chance I eagerly seized to fulfill my dream of establishing my own brokerage.”

Miles co-founded Exeter-based brokerage The Mortgage Quarter with Michael Tilston, a friend and a colleague at Halifax and Lloyds Banking Group. As director and mortgage adviser, he now splits his time between assisting clients with their mortgage applications and working on business development.

Motivations to continue as a broker

After all those years of providing mortgage advice, Miles told Mortgage Introducer that he still finds immense satisfaction in listening to the inspiring stories behind his clients’ property decisions, whether it’s moving homes or investing.

He, however, pointed out that the industry’s processes and systems remain entrenched in outdated practices.

“I’m driven to witness the mortgage industry evolve, adapt to modern times, and streamline its services for borrowers,” Miles said.

“I take pleasure in leading a team and believe that growth can drive positive change, incorporating AI to enhance processes while preserving the personal touch in client relationships.”

Looking to the future

Miles shared that after 12 years of advisory work, he intends to take a step back and concentrate on growing The Mortgage Quarter, while also sharing his knowledge and passion for the property market with his colleagues.

“I particularly enjoy mentoring newcomers to the industry, watching them flourish,” he said. “Furthermore, I aim to engage experienced advisers in sharing best practices within our office and among our peers.

“My challenge lies in identifying the right technology to support a successful team, ensuring we continue to offer world-class service across the south of England.”
