How I became a broker – Gindy Mathoon's story

Gindy Mathoon’s journey into the mortgage industry is not your typical career path story. “This story isn’t one you’d hear anywhere else,” he said.

It began with personal aspirations and an unexpected twist that led him to find his calling as a mortgage broker. Today, Mathoon (pictured) is not just a broker; he’s a visionary in the industry, driven by a mission to improve the quality and adaptability of mortgage advising.

Getting into the industry

“This story isn’t one you’d hear anywhere else,” Mathoon said

At age 22, Mathoon was looking to settle down with his then girlfriend. To do this, he needed a full-time job to save up for them to build a life together.

“My girlfriend suggested I gained experience and qualifications within the mortgage industry from her family connections,” he related.

However, life had other plans. Partway through his CeMAP qualification, the relationship ended. While such a turn might have derailed others, for Mathoon, it became a catalyst for a deeper commitment to his new career.

“It didn’t seem like the end of the line for me though,” he said. “I utilised my hard work and gained a role at London and Country Mortgages in Bath. With nothing to lose, I got ground in the industry here and sparked my passion for mortgages.”

Motivations to continue as a broker

Mathoon’s motivation extends beyond personal success. He is acutely aware of the deficiencies within the mortgage advising sector — where borrowers often receive inadequate advice as lending policies change and some brokers struggle to adapt. This awareness fuels his drive to elevate the profession.

“The main role of the mortgage broker is to find you the best deal to get your dream home,” he stressed. “So, my motivation is that I want to ensure all mortgage brokers, both outside and inside Create Finance, keep stepping up and adapting to the market.”

Looking to the future

Last year, Create Finance won three national awards. Mathoon himself was named Broker of the Year in the 2023 Mortgage Introducer Awards – a testament to the hard work and dedication of him and his team. But Mathoon is not resting on his laurels.

Looking ahead, he aspires to make Create Finance a household name across the UK. He is also committed to nurturing the next generation of mortgage professionals.

“We also want to keep developing and bringing upcoming talented future mortgage brokers into this fantastic industry,” he said. “It’s an amazing industry to excel in, but so many just don’t know it yet.”
