More markets, same trusted model – the BC cooperative bank that brokers are following

Tru Cooperative Bank broadens its broker reach across Canada

Tru Cooperative Bank is extending its Mortgage Broker Centre into Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, the Langley, British Columbia-based federally regulated cooperative bank announced.

The move deepens a national expansion that has gained substantial momentum in Ontario since its broker-channel launch earlier this year.

It extends the bank’s existing partnership with MCAP, Canada’s independent mortgage finance company, which manages over $150 billion in assets under management and originates residential mortgages exclusively through the broker channel.

Under the arrangement, MCAP provides underwriting, adjudication, servicing and administrative support while Tru Cooperative Bank supplies the capital – a structure already stress-tested in Ontario, where the bank surpassed $200 million in approved mortgage lending and $120 million in funded mortgages within 77 days of launch.

“We’ve been clear about our ambition to grow Tru thoughtfully across Canada, and we’re following through on that commitment,” said Launi Skinner, CEO of Tru Cooperative Bank.

“We said becoming a federal cooperative bank would create new opportunities to grow beyond BC, and our Mortgage Broker Centre is a great example of that. Our expansion into Ontario, and now Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, shows that we’re turning that opportunity into action.”

Why the prairies matter right now

Saskatchewan has emerged as one of Canada’s strongest-performing provincial housing markets, with year-on-year price growth approaching 9% in May 2026, the highest among Canadian provinces, according to data from TD Economics.

Alberta and Saskatchewan also maintained some of the tightest months-of-supply readings nationally through April, according to RBC Economics' provincial outlook. In that market environment, brokers working the region have made clear what they expect from new lenders.

Built on more than two decades in the broker channel

Tru has worked alongside mortgage brokers in British Columbia for more than 23 years, a track record that shapes how the institution approaches each new province, according to Sundar Ramanathan, SVP, Pricing and National Expansion at Tru Cooperative Bank.

“What we’ve seen in Ontario gives us confidence that our approach is resonating with brokers. They’re responding to the experience, expertise and support our team brings, and reaching more than $200 million in approved mortgage lending and $120 million in funded mortgages is a strong signal that we’re earning their trust. We’re excited to build on that momentum in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba,” said Ramanathan.

Tru Cooperative Bank, formerly First West Credit Union, became a federally regulated credit union under the Bank Act on April 1.

The institution holds nearly $21 billion in total assets and assets under administration and serves approximately 290,000 members across British Columbia through local brands including Envision Financial, Valley First, Island Savings and Enderby & District Financial.
