Move follows $4.9 billion takeover in 2024
Suncorp Bank will officially retire its brand next year, with all accounts, systems and digital platforms moving fully across to ANZ by June 2027.
Suncorp Bank's roughly 1.2 million customers received the news on Monday, more than two years after the regional powerhouse’s $4.9 billion acquisition by ANZ in July 2024.
ANZ has promised a "broader information campaign" designed to explain what is changing, when, and what support customers can expect throughout the transition.
Nothing is expected to change immediately. Customers will continue banking with Suncorp Bank as normal until they are contacted individually ahead of their account migration, expected by June 2027.
Once accounts move, customers will access ANZ's branch network, digital banking platform and fraud-monitoring technology, while still dealing with many of the same local staff.
ANZ managing director Queensland and Suncorp Bank chief executive Bruce Rush said the update represents an important step for customers, noting the bank will "keep our same focus on our customers" as the transition unfolds.
"Today marks an important step as we begin informing customers about what it means for Suncorp Bank to become ANZ,” he said in a public statement.
"As Suncorp Bank becomes ANZ over time, we’ll keep our same focus on our customers. We are committed to making this move straightforward, safe and well-supported, and ensuring customers still see familiar faces and continue to be part of a bank that helps communities thrive.
"As customers join ANZ, they'll have access to a larger network of banking specialists and branches, leading anti-fraud technology, specialist expertise and investments in the communities we serve."
Rush added that Queensland remains central to ANZ's investment plans, including new branches and an expanded workforce in the state.
ANZ also pledged no net job losses for Suncorp Bank employees in Australia for three years post-acquisition, and maintained regional branch numbers across the state over the same period.
Suncorp Bank's four-year journey to ANZ
The brand retirement caps a long-running process.
ANZ first agreed to acquire Suncorp Bank in July 2022, but the deal was blocked by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) in 2023 on competition grounds, before the Australian Competition Tribunal overturned that decision in February 2024.
ANZ completed the acquisition at the end of July that year, bringing around 3,000 Suncorp Bank staff and 1.2 million customers into the ANZ Group.
At the time, ANZ had licensed the Suncorp brand for an initial five to seven years, and described the early integration period as a smooth transition for its broker partners.
Since then, the pace of integration has accelerated: ANZ chief executive Nuno Matos pushed forward the migration timeline and brought the bank's ANZ Plus digital platform to all eight million retail customers, three years ahead of the original schedule, as part of a wider 2030 strategy to simplify the group and cut operating costs.
