Governments announce multi-million investment in NS First Nations communities

Federal and provincial governments have announced a fresh tranche of funding for the development of low-cost housing aimed at First Nations communities in Nova Scotia.

Over $3.16 million in funding will be coursed through the Projects Stream of the Rapid Housing Initiative (RHI) for the immediate construction of 24 units of affordable housing in the Paqtnkek Mi’kmaw Nation and the We’koqma’q First Nation communities in NS.

“I know housing is not just a problem here in Paqtnkek but across First Nation communities in Canada, [and] this is a great step moving forward,” said Chief Tima Francis of Paqtnkek Mi'kmaw Nation. “This will be great for single people or single parents because they often get overlooked on getting homes which normally go to the bigger families who are in need. So with this rapid housing strategy it will be a great start on putting a dent in our housing problem.”

Aside from the development of modular multi-unit dwellings, RHI funds are also used for the conversion of non-residential to affordable multi-residential homes, as well as the rehabilitation of abandoned buildings into affordable multi-residential homes.

“Investments made under the RHI are expected to support thousands of construction-related jobs for Canadians from coast to coast to coast,” the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation said.
