Twitter not just for celebrities, says broker

Twitter is helping brokers grow their businesses, and the twittering and tweeting at last week’s Mortgage Summit was indicative of the growing popularity of this social format.

“A lot of people assume Twitter is only used by celebrities,” Michelle Priest, co-founder of the Minrva Group told delegates during the Day One seminar on Twitter for Mortgage Brokers. “It is a relationship tool, and you are in the relationship business.”

Priest has an extensive background in helping brokers use Twitter.

“We have a mortgage broker program at Minrva, and I help them with Twitter and their relationship building,” she told MortgageBrokerNews.ca. “It is a hands-on Twitter workshop that we’ve had a lot of success with.”

Priest’s presentation included how to build a community on your Twitter account by obtaining clients and gaining business contacts. And how you use these Twitter followers is crucial to driving business, she explains.

“For example, on a Saturday morning if realtors in your area tweet about their open houses, you can 'retweet' or share their tweet with your followers. The realtors will appreciate you trying to help them with their business. It's a great way to build a relationship with them. Imagine if one of your followers bought a house they listed that you tweeted.”

Twitter need not be an onerous, day-long acitivity either, Priest says.

“You don’t have to be on it all day,” she says. “You can schedule your tweets for the day, like I do, by using Hootsuite. That way, it looks like you are tweeting all day.”

Priest explains that Hootsuite is to Twitter as Outlook is to email.

“It is a great way to connect to people and share,” she says. “And it is viral – once you start getting retweeted by your followers, the message spreads incredibly fast.”
