REMIC helps build Habitat for Humanity

REMIC – and the hundreds of Canadians it trains to become mortgage agents – is setting a course for philanthropy, kicking off a campaign focused on building the coffers of Habitat for Humanity.

“Mortgage Brokers play an integral role in the home ownership process, so we think it’s a great fit for REMIC to partner with Habitat for Humanity to help individuals become homeowners,” said Joe White, president of the Real Estate and Mortgage Institute of Canada.

White and the institute’s director of Education and Training, Cain Daniel, recently presented the housing charity with the first of several financial gifts, funds directed at helping it put more families in the Durham, Ont. region into homes of their own.

Going forward, a percentage of the proceeds from REMIC courses will bolster that original donation.

“It is with great appreciation that we enter into a partnership with REMIC, an innovative company willing to show their social conscience by participating in a new way to raise funds for our organization,” said Mary Bone, executive director of Humanity for Humanity Durham. “We are able to affect the people we serve with the help of companies like REMIC. One hundred percent of every dollar donated to Habitat for Humanity Durham goes directly to our building program and our new focus is on Centre Towne in Oshawa.”

That project is just one of several for the international organization founded in 1985 by U.S. President Jimmy Carter. It quickly expanded its efforts to this country with Habitat for Humanity Canada.

Enlisting the help of over 50,000 volunteers and 72 affiliated organizations, from coast to coast, the non-profit organization, is dedicated to breaking Canada’s cycle of poverty through affordable housing and the promotion of homeownership. While volunteers lead the construction of each home, members of recipient families also pick up hammers and nails.

REMIC is the latest broker channel member to aid in that work. MCAP, for example, has helped raise more than $1.6 million in charitable donations for Habitat through the efforts of brokers.

In effect, White is also relying on the industry to generate additional funding for the award-winning program.

“Success is what REMIC strives to deliver through our innovative courses, and success is what Habitat for Humanity helps families achieve,” said White.
