Mortgage industry mourns trailblazing executive

The Canadian mortgage industry is mourning the loss of Frances Blau, the first female broker to enter the CIMBL Hall of Fame. She leaves behind a nearly 60-year legacy at Abacus Mortgages Inc.

Beyond the workplace, her career was marked by significant achievements, including serving as the Education Chairman and President of the Ontario Mortgage Brokers Association (OMBA). Her induction into the CIMBL Hall of Fame set a precedent for women in the industry, and in 2014, she was honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award by CMP magazine.

Respected for her extensive knowledge and reputation in the mortgage sector, Blau was viewed as a role model and mentor, especially for women in the industry, advocating for equality and proving that women could perform just as well as men in the mortgage business.

According to her daughter, she was working up until her passing at 91.

The sad news follows the recent passing of Michael Ellenzweig, who was a close friend and colleague of Blau.
