As part of the federal National Housing Strategy (NHS), the governments of Canada and Alberta announced that they are providing $20 million in funding for an affordable senior housing project in southeast Edmonton.

Through the Investment in Affordable Housing Agreement, over 100 seniors have a new affordable home in Sakaw Terrace, which offers 158 housing units – of which, 70 are lodge units and 88 are affordable seniors apartments.

"The opening of Sakaw Terrace brings more affordable housing to southeast Edmonton, allowing independent seniors to remain close to family and friends, while participating in the livelihood of their communities,” said Amarjeet Sohi, minister of natural resources on behalf of Jean-Yves Duclos, minister of families, children and social development and minister responsible for Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC),

"By ensuring more seniors with low income have access to affordable housing we're helping seniors to remain in their communities close to family and friends,” said Lori Sigurdson, minister of Alberta seniors and housing. “Our government is proud to support seniors and their families in this fast-growing area of our capital city."

The government of Canada is continuing its roll-out of NHS—an ambitious 10-year, $40 billion plan that will create 100,000 new housing units and lift 530,000 families out of housing need as well as repair and renew more than 300,000 housing units and reduce chronic homelessness by 50%.
