Construction starts on new seniors lodge in Alberta

In an effort to support its growing senior citizen population, Alberta announced the construction of the Autumn Glen Lodge in Innisfail.

The governments of Canada and Alberta jointly contributed $24.2 million for the development, which will provide 60 new lodge units and 30 self-contained apartments for Innisfail seniors. It will be replacing Innisfail’s existing 57 year-old assisted-living lodge.

In a statement, Minister of Families, Children and Social Development Jean-Yves Duclos said the Autumn Glen Lodge will be able to provide homes to Innisfail seniors who are looking for safe and affordable homes.

"This is one way we can give back to them—to help ensure they are able to age in place close to family and friends," he said.

Minister of Alberta Seniors and Housing Lori Sigurdson agreed, saying that the Autumn Glen Lodge will help seniors still connect with their families for support as they age.

"By investing in the Autumn Glen Lodge we’re fighting for the needs of seniors and their families from Innisfail and neighbouring communities," she said, adding that the project will create construction jobs which will help the local economy.

The lodge is expected to be ready for occupancy by late 2020.

The Autumn Glen Lodge is part of Canada's National Housing Strategy (NHS), which plans to build 100,000 new housing units, help 530,000 families out of housing need, and renovate more than 300,000 housing units. The $40 billion plan involves federal, provincial, and territorial governments and aims to reduce chronic homelessness in Canada by 50%.
