Why Canadian mortgage brokers should not miss the CMAs

The Canadian Mortgage Awards return November 25 — here's what 20 years of recognition mean for you

Why Canadian mortgage brokers should not miss the CMAs

Twenty years ago, the Canadian Mortgage Awards (CMAs) set out to do something the industry had never done at scale: name, in a room full of peers, the mortgage professionals who had genuinely earned the right to be called the best.

On November 25, that tradition continues at Rebel Toronto — and for brokers, lenders, and mortgage professionals across Canada who have not yet made plans to attend, the case for going has rarely been stronger.

The event spans 23 award categories covering everyone from individual brokers and business development managers (BDMs) to brokerages, underwriters, and lenders.

Its 2026 milestone marks two decades of setting the standard for excellence in Canadian mortgage, and the recognition it delivers carries real commercial and professional weight.

Recognition that moves markets and careers

For mortgage brokers and originators operating in an increasingly competitive Canadian lending market, a CMA nomination or win signals something to prospective clients, lenders, and referral partners that no advertising campaign can replicate: an independent, credible assessment that the work you are doing is among the best in the country.

Excellence awardees and winners are announced in CMP magazine and across its digital channels, reaching thousands of mortgage professionals nationwide. That coverage continues throughout the year, through online profiles and industry events, extending the value of recognition well beyond a single evening.

For past winners, the effect has been tangible. Steven Ranson of HomeEquity Bank, a previous CMA winner, described the award as a reflection of a career's worth of work.

Kyle Benzies of DLC AIMI Collective Mortgage Group noted that the recognition resonates directly with clients and has the potential to change the trajectory of a business. These are not uncommon reactions, they reflect the weight the industry has consistently assigned to the CMAs over two decades.

For brokerages, a win is also a tool for internal culture. Recognising the collective effort of underwriters, document specialists, and support teams alongside the brokers who face clients is the kind of acknowledgement that strengthens retention and reinforces what the firm stands for.

A room worth being in

The CMAs draw hundreds of the foremost mortgage professionals and senior executives from top organisations across Canada every year.

For brokers who operate largely from their own offices or through aggregator networks, it is one of the few occasions where the full breadth of the industry — from originators to lenders to regulators — occupies the same space at the same time.

The networking value of that setting is structural, not incidental.

Relationship-driven businesses like mortgage broking are built over years, often through a handful of consequential conversations. An evening designed around the industry's most accomplished professionals is precisely the environment in which those conversations happen.

For brokers who are earlier in their careers, attendance carries a different kind of value: the ability to benchmark directly against those who have already been recognised as the country's best, to understand what distinguishes the work of a CMA winner from the field, and to begin building the relationships that determine where referrals and opportunities flow in the years ahead.

A process built for credibility

One reason the CMAs have maintained their standing for 20 years is the integrity of the selection and judging process.

Nominations, which are open to all mortgage professionals and organisations from across Canada — including brokers, brokerages, lenders, BDMs, underwriters, agents, and service providers — are accepted from June 8 to August 14.

The CMA team then conducts independent research to supplement nominations, drawing on knowledge gathered through CMP, to ensure that deserving candidates are not overlooked because they did not self-nominate.

Excellence awardees — the shortlist — are announced in September, with judging conducted by an independent panel of mortgage and finance industry leaders in October and November 2026. Any judge with a conflict of interest in a category recuses themselves.

Winners are determined through a points-based aggregation of judges' votes, with the results revealed live at the gala on November 25.

That structure matters for brokers assessing whether to enter or attend. Recognition earned through a process this transparent carries more weight with clients and business partners than self-reported rankings and it is the reason a CMA win has become a signal the industry genuinely trusts.
