Ex-RBA governor joins investment firm

Investment firm Future Generation Australia has announced the appointment of Philip Lowe, former governor of the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA), to its board of directors.

Lowe, who served as the RBA governor from 2016 to 2023, will join the board immediately as an independent director and is set to become chair after the company’s annual general meeting in May 2024. This will be his first board role since his departure from the RBA.

Lowe takes over the chairmanship from former NSW premier Mike Baird, who will continue to serve as an independent director on the board.

Established in 2014, Future Generation Australia is the country’s first listed investment company dedicated to generating investment returns for shareholders while also providing significant support to Australian not-for-profits, particularly on organisations working with at-risk children and youth, as well as those addressing youth mental health issues.

“I think the Future Generation model is brilliant,” Lowe said. “I’ve always strived to be associated with organisations that enhance the welfare of Australians, so it’s a privilege to work with Future Generation Australia’s shareholders and pro bono fund managers to support our most vulnerable youth.”

Baird expressed his enthusiasm about continuing to work alongside Lowe on the board of Future Generation Australia.

“Phil is one of the finest financial leaders in the country and has demonstrated great integrity throughout his 43 years at the RBA,” he said. “I am delighted to be working alongside him as a director and believe he will continue to make a huge contribution to Australia – as Future Generation Australia’s chair and beyond.”
