The robots are coming – banking giant signs five-year deal

Commonwealth Bank turns to AI

Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CommBank) is deepening its focus on artificial intelligence (AI) through an expanded five-year partnership with Amazon Web Services (AWS).

The agreement reaffirms AWS as CommBank’s preferred cloud provider and aims to accelerate AI adoption, streamline digital banking services, and enhance security.

By shifting a significant portion of its workloads to AWS and leveraging cloud-native designs, CommBank is simplifying its technology infrastructure. This transformation is expected to drive faster product development and improve customer experiences.

The expanded partnership has already contributed to the launch of CommBiz Gen AI, an AI-powered messaging service designed for business banking customers. Developed in just six weeks, the tool leverages CommBank’s DevOps Hosting platform, Group Generative AI Platform, and Guardrails Service to provide automated customer support and streamline transactions.

“As customer adoption of digital banking continues to grow, we’re harnessing AI and cloud to deliver faster, safer and more personalised digital banking services,” said Rodrigo Castillo (pictured above left), chief technology officer at Commonwealth Bank of Australia.

“To reimagine customer experiences, we need to ensure our engineers are equipped with the right tools and practices to ignite creativity and advance their already industry-leading technical skills.”

CommBank’s partnership with AWS is also focused on modernising its cloud infrastructure, which has already led to a twofold increase in the bank’s ability to deploy production changes. The shift to AWS supports the bank’s goal of improving scalability, security, and efficiency while strengthening its compliance with regulatory requirements.

“The CommBank and AWS relationship spans more than a decade, and we are excited to expand upon it as we support their digital transformation through this next phase of cloud adoption,” said Jamie Simon (pictured above right), director of financial services for AWS Australia and New Zealand.

“Together, we will simplify and standardise their technology foundations on the most secure and resilient cloud platform, enabling faster experimentation and adoption of AI and other key technologies.”
