Builders NZ releases its manifesto for action

Master Builders NZ has released its Election Manifesto 2023, titled Building a Better New Zealand, in which it outlined its policy recommendations for government policy ahead of this year’s election.

In a statement, the organisation said the government “must urgently work” with the housing and construction sector to improve housing, improve productivity, and manage the impacts of climate change.

“Our sector matters for New Zealand,” said David Kelly, chief executive, and Sarah Walker, head of advocacy and strategy. “Not only are we significant contributors to GDP, but we also build the homes, schools, hospitals, and other vital infrastructure New Zealand needs. Yet New Zealand’s housing and construction system is under pressure and is being held back from being able to deliver what the country requires.”

Three critical areas where Master Builders NZ think need bold and consistent action were outlined in the manifesto. These areas are as follow:

  • Smoothing the boom-bust cycle to ensure a sustainable sector and workforce that can deliver the affordable housing and critical infrastructure the country needs.
  • Improve productivity, with consenting and procurement identified as the two problem areas that are costing the sector and the country time and money.
  • Climate action is non-negotiable. Government must work with the sector on where to build, how to build, and how they can recycle to reduce their footprint.

“Our issues are well known, and there are solutions, but they will take time and consistent action from multiple governments,” Kelly and Walker said. “We are urging that our sector can no longer be a political football. We want bold and consistent action.”

Master Builders NZ is urging all New Zealanders to read its manifesto, and discuss it with local MPs, council, and others in the industry, to create positive change for the sector.
