Shopify is an increasingly influential presence in North America

Shopify Inc. continues to consolidate its North American position with its $1-billion expenditure on its U.S. arm.

The Canadian e-commerce firm announced the launch of its network of fulfilment warehouses along with strengthened shipping logistics capabilities south of the border – seemingly in direct opposition to Amazon.com’s dominance.

The fulfilment network will aim to provide two-day shipping for approximately 99% of Shopify’s U.S. coverage by the end of 2019.

“This is another example of how Shopify is democratizing commerce by taking the warehouse systems, machine learning and other technologies that used to be reserved for only the largest companies in the world, and making them accessible and affordable to all merchants including those that are just starting to take off,” chief product officer Craig Miller said, as quoted by the Financial Post.

Shopify added that early access will be available to merchants who ship between 10 and 10,000 items per day

Earlier this year, the e-commerce giant publicly declared its plans to double its Toronto workforce to 1,500. This will come along with the company’s 3.2-hectare mixed-use development in the city’s downtown, scheduled to begin operations by 2022.

At present, Shopify employs around 4,000 employees worldwide, with 700 personnel spread across two locations and seven offices in Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, and Waterloo.

“Shopify has been present in Toronto for seven years and what we’ve found is this is a great place to build a really wonderful tech company,” Shopify director of user experience Amy Thibodeau told stated.
