Redevelopment project to boost Ontario housing supply

The federal government has announced $22.5 million in funding for the residential redevelopment of an expansive lodging property in Scarborough, Ontario.

The project is located at 4626 Kingston Road, and will include the construction of a new five-storey, 64-unit modular building, according to the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC).

“Women, indigenous peoples, seniors, youth, and people with disabilities experiencing or at risk of homelessness will soon have access to new affordable rental homes, with the redevelopment of the former Grand Motel property in Scarborough,” CMHC said.

With 22 newly renovated units from the former motel now available, the project is expected to begin welcoming residents in August. Construction of the additional building is scheduled for completion by summer 2023.

“With this announcement, we are providing a chance to members of our community who are vulnerable,” said Gary Anandasangaree, Member of Parliament for Scarborough-Rouge Park.

“Having access to safe, supportive, and affordable homes will help bring a positive change to their lives and to the community. In collaboration with the city of Toronto and local stakeholders, we are working to ensure that all people in Toronto and across our province have safe and affordable housing.”
