New rapid housing investment announced for Quebec First Nations community

Governments have announced a significant investment in rapid housing projects for the Wôlinak First Nation in Quebec.

The $900,000 in funding that will be coursed through the Projects Stream of the Rapid Housing Initiative (RHI) and will support the immediate development of affordable modular housing for the community.

“Investments with our First Nations communities in Quebec under the RHI will go a long way to effectively support those who need it most,” said Ahmed Hussen, Minister of Families, Children and Social Development and Minister responsible for Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation. “This is one of the ways our government’s National Housing Strategy addresses the unique barriers faced by First Nations communities.”

Chief Michel R. Bernard of the Wôlinak Council hailed the initiative as a timely measure against the COVID-19 pandemic’s impact on housing accessibility.

“We are very pleased that the members of our community will benefit from such a significant investment enabling the construction of new permanent affordable housing,” Bernard said. “The living spaces that will be created by the RHI will benefit young families who wish to settle in the community of Wôlinak.”

As part of the government’s long-term mission to improve housing supply and affordability, the RHI continues to provide capital contributions for the development of new, permanent affordable housing nationwide.
