Home ownership still Canadians’ favourite investment vehicle

A poll by Manulife Financial has confirmed that Canadians still see home ownership and real estate investing as the best investment vehicle, and they are not willing to give up cash in their portfolios.

A poll by Manulife Financial has confirmed that Canadians still see home ownership and real estate investing as the best investment vehicle, and they are not willing to give up cash in their portfolios.

Manulife also said the relentless rise in prices make many Canadians property rich, as they feel now is a good time to invest in it despite warnings of a housing bubble and overheating.

“Owning your own home is still the most popular investment,” said chief economist Megan Greene.

The latest investor sentiment survey also found Canadians to be more conservative than Americans when it comes to investments. This makes sense, Yahoo! says in its report, as the two countries have different economic growth trends.

Experts find the US economy to be rebounding more strongly than Canada’s which is at a relatively slower pace.

Meanwhile, the poll said the top concern among the 1,000 surveyed Canadian investors is managing and maintaining their current lifestyle, as well as running out of money in retirement. They also fear retiring with debts.
