Feds greenlight major multi-million investment in Toronto housing

Federal and provincial authorities have announced more than $72.4 million in investments in the construction of 220 new homes in Toronto’s Birchmount Green project.

The housing complex, situated at 1236 Birchmount Road, will feature a large amenity room with access to outdoor greenery and barbecues, as well as other components such as accessible rooftop gardening, a modern library, a children’s play area, and bicycle and scooter storage.

A nurses’ station and two offices for support service organizations are expected “to provide a better environment to the residents of Birchmount Green,” the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation said.

“Through the National Housing Co-Investment Fund, our government is investing in affordable housing here in Toronto to help improve the quality of life for those who need it most. Thanks to [this] announcement, more individuals and families in Toronto will now have access to a place to call home,” said Ahmed Hussen, Minister of Housing and Diversity and Inclusion.

The project is part of Budget 2022’s proposal to advance $2.9 billion in funding, on a cash basis, under the National Housing Co-Investment Fund. The funds are intended to accelerate the development of up to 4,300 new units and the repair of up to 17,800 units, CMHC said.
